Hailed as the best authentic Neapolitan Italian pizza restaurant in New York by the New York Timesfood writers, Motorino has quickly won the hearts of visitors at Resorts World Genting with its excellent pizza. Motorino has outlets all over the globe with multiple outlets in New York, two in Hong Kong and Manila, and one in Singapore. Being the only Motorino outlet in the country, At Motorino, you get a totally different dining experience compared to commercialised pizza.
When you step into Motorino, you will feel as if you’ve stepped back into the good old’ times of the past. It has a homey feel that brings to mind an old 1920s American grocer or pharmacy. If you let your imagination wander, in Brooklyn, it would be a place where aspiring singers who do double shifts would hit up the place for an authentic pizza. Those who don’t go for the mainstream brands but aren’t looking for trendy artisanal food will dig this restaurant.
With a 4000 sq ft space, this is the biggest Motorino yet. Without ostentatious décor, there are 1920s metal chairs in burgundy and white marble topped tables replicate the white marble topped pizza counters. Sixties-style lighting and Pantone glo-balls decorate the outlet turning it into a time capsule of an area where the pizza pies reigned supreme.
A special feature of Motorino is that the pizza is cooked from scratch right before your very eyes. Patrons are able to watch the entire process of the making of the pizzas. To ensure a comfortable dining experience, spot cooling was employed around the ovens to amplify the air-conditioning.
Specially shipped in from Naples, Italy where pizza originated are two large pizza ovens. Customised pizza spades from ‘Napoli’ were fabricated to be used as decorations. The oar-shaped paddles traditionally made from one single piece of woof will also be used in the making of the pizzas. The pizza is cooked in a special wood-fired oven at 800-900 degrees Fahrenheit and gets cooked in 60 to 90 seconds due to the small mouth and low dome of the custom pizza oven.
Now onto the important stuff: the pizza. Motorino offers over 20 toppings that can be added on to existing pizzas. These include Brussels sprouts, two kinds of anchovies, fresh arugula, buffalo mozzarella and fior de latte which is fresh mozzarella made with cow’s milk as opposed to buffalo milk, along with more conventional ingredients such as turkey pepperoni and clams. Those who love the authentic taste, however, will say that each pizza is perfect the way it is.
Patrons can take their pick from ten stellar favourites, which range from the stripped (marinara, margherita and pepperoni) to the supremely Italian (stracchiatella with basil, sea salt and extra virgin olive oil; cremini mushrooms, and colatura di alici featuring cow’s milk mozzarella, red onions, grape tomatoes, white anchovies and sea salt). Also on offer are a Brussel sprout pizza with fior de latte, garlic, pecorino and smoked turkey bacon; cherry stone clam pizza and an egg, turkey chili variation. Pizzas range from RM45 to RM67 for a whole pie.
Although each pizza has different toppings, all the pizza share the same excellent taste. Unlike crispy American pizza, the Neapolitan pizza is surprisingly soft and chewy, just the way it should be thanks to a specific finely milled pure wheat flour that has no additives. A typical Neapolitan pizza is about 12 inches in diameter, just nice for one. The Neapolitan strikes a careful balance among the crust, sauce and cheese with its minimal toppings for an authentic taste, so don’t worry about over-the-top cheesiness.
Among the new offerings at Motorino which is well worth trying is the Egg, Bacon & Chilli Pizza which stands out from the other rest as it has an ingredient rarely used for pizzas: egg. It has a spicy kick to it with chilli drizzled on top. The best of ingredients like mozzarella, pecorino, beef bacon, basil and extra virgin olive oil come together for this amazing pizza that is a must have.
Also new on the menu is the Lamb Sausage Calzone pizza which will remind locals of a curry puff. A calzone is actually an Italian oven-baked folded sandwich that originated in Naples. Savour the meat of the lamb sausage, with eggplant, garlic and extra virgin olive oil. What really makes the pizza is the fresh mozzarella that oozes from it when you take a bite.
The Fried Calamari is crispy with the texture of the squid cooked to perfection without it being rubbery. It is seasoned with basil, lemon, chilli and parsley. For some best sellers, try Margherita Pizza and Motorino’s Meatballs.
Go for some really authentic Italian favourites with an appetizer or ‘antipasti’ of Tomato & Mozzarella made of heirloom tomato, mozzarella, olives, basil and extra virgin olive oil. You can really taste the fresh goodness of the tomato.
Italians love their wine, so have a glass from specially selected picking including Gragnano, Cantine, Federiciane 2017 and Campania Doc by the glass or bottle as the perfect pairing for pizza.
Finish off with some sweet treats or ‘Dolci’ of Tiramisu or Chocolate Mousse Cake. As we all know, Italy is the land of ice cream so you can’t go wrong with a bowl of Gelato, sold by the scoop or bowl with selections of chocolate, strawberry and vanilla for you to choose from.
